Methadone is a synthetic opiate that is most commonly used to treat withdrawal symptoms related to heroin addiction. There are methadone clinics all over the world where addicts can get a regular dose of this powerful pharmaceutical with the goal in mind being heroin abstinence and eventual methadone discontinuation at some point. However some individuals do experience methadone addiction which is why the subject of methadone pain management is so controversial.
