Antique Glass Cheese Preserver
If you are looking for a unique gift or an addition to your antiques collection, you should consider an antique glass cheese preserver. This would be the perfect thing for anyone who collects kitchenware or old glass. These glass preservers aren't used very often anymore, thanks to the invention of the refrigerator. However before refrigeration people would use glass containers for storing cheese. You can actually find glass cheese preservers that are anywhere from 50 years to more than 100 years old.
Of course, you can certainly use one of these cheese keepers to store your cheese in the refrigerator if you choose not to use the standard compartment. One common container from the 1950s (estimated date) is the Sanitary Cheese Preserver made by the Maytac Dairy Farms Company. This item has ridges on the bottom which holds a block of cheese above a mixture of salt, water and vinegar which keeps the cheese fresher longer and discourages the growth of mold. The directions for filling the container with the solution is printed on the bottom of the preserver.
